Quick question for you guys...

I'm in the middle of spriting a certain character who's main feature is that he has The Stick of Vengeance (grim and ahr2nd should know what I'm talking about) nailed to his hand. In general, do you think that character sprites should include weapons? Personally, I'm against it because I think it makes the sprite look to complicated.

I think the character sprites should just have clothing, and nothing else until you equip something.

I think it should have weapons, that always makes it look cooler.

you might make the other sprites once you find out what weapons you have in the game...

The problem with making the sprites have weapons is that I would have to make like 20 different versions of every sprite sheet, which would take fucking forever... I could always make some little function that would automatically paste the weapon sprite on the character's sprite, but even then I would have to make different version do the same weapon sprite for being held while walking, standing still ect, and I would have to call the function from within the animation code which is already pretty slow (before compiling anyway), so meh. meh meh meh.

i agree with mac on this, and i know what you are saying, sprites are a bitch to deal with
can't you just write some code that pastes sprites over sprites that make it look like they are holding a weapon but its just really another sprite?
but don't let anyone know you taking a shortcut

I could, but it would still require a lot of work.
