The first version of Steam for Mac just launched, and Valve's giving Portal away for free (for Mac and PC). Currently Portal is the only working Source game for Macs, but a bunch of other devs (mostly casual/indy devs who's games were already out for Macs through different services) have released their games (Something like 64 mac compatible games out of 500+).

My friend got a mac, and since i told him steam was comming out for them he had been counting down the days lol. he also asked me "how do you find out about these things?"
mind you he currently don't have internets at his place, but he takes his mac to his broadcasting school.

Holy shit.
Valve doesn't know shit about the Mac platform, the client is so fucked it's like they pulled it out of the rear of a dead cow.

The programming for the client is so primitive that they couldn't even be arsed to make their own APIs for the damn thing, instead they use directory assistance and references which makes it a terrible platform. Don't spring "it's just a beta" on me, literally the LEAST thing they could have done was make it run properly by adding in internal references between functions. They have half of this shit tossed into a sack and shaken around expecting it to somehow work right.
Don't even get me started on networking problems, it takes me less than 2 minutes to make my own damn coca script that works perfectly referencing ftp directories. Yet Valve has the sheer stupidity to remove file checks between servers.

What? How do you know how it works internally?
Directory assistance? I'm a programmer and I have no idea what you're talking about

Some things are even directly observable from standard operation. The other things like the lack of working APIs, can be seen by the massive library dump the client shits out when you initialize it for the first time.

Directory assistance is an incredibly primitive function where, intead of incorperating different parts of the program into one compiled .app, the main application literally references other applications and large amounts of data from outisde of the application. This process slows it down a ton, and makes a lot of bugs.
