So im guessing that most of you guys know about the protests in New York, were people are protesting against building a moske (i dunno if i spelled that right) close to Ground Zero.

First of all i wanna know what your opinion is and second, havent these dumbassed protesters though that, "hey, if theres a moske the muslim terrorists wont attack there! =O"

Anyhow, i think all of those darn protesters should be dumped on the moon, without spacesuits.

Just because I hate a religion doesn't mean it and its followers deserve to be treated like dirt (inb4 WELL U SED NUKE THEM in which case shut up because you can't understand hyperbolic statements). Build the mosque.

Yeah, I don't know what a mosque but after reading the post I figured its some sort of religous building.
Therefore it has every right to be built.

Alright, Warhampster and I live relatively close to New York (he's closer than I am). Basically: Mosque's are Islam's holy building (i.e. Christians have Churches, Judaisism has Synagogues). Islamic extremests blew up the World Trade Center in New York City almost 9 years ago. Since then, there has been much anti-islamic sentiment in the general United States population.

Fast forward 9 years. I assume you all know what a YMCA is (A community center, typicaly with basketball courts, swimming pools, etc. funded by Christians). Some Muslims want to build essentialy an Islamic equivalent in New York City. It is 2 blocks away from where the World Trade Center was. The community center will be built on top of an old Burlington Coat Factory. People are bitching because apparently 2 blocks away means "on top of." Meanwhile they don't give a shit a shopping mall is being built under the old location of the WTC.

The United States Constitution promises freedom of religion. However, the Christian Right Wing have always tried to turn America into "a Christian nation." Leaders like Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin have reinvigorated this movement as of late. Instead of just protesting against Mosques in New York, they are also protesting against Mosques all across America.

In short, I agree with Skullking. Freedom of Religion.

My final paper for history last year was essentially arguing that the popularity of people like Palin and Beck proves that there will always be people who want to let dictators think for them, and thus we should still be worried about fascism, etc.

Let them build a mosque, but let it be known that a phobia is an irrational fear.

And the freedom of religion? To some extent, sure. Tell me these aren't mutually incompatible with our country and civilization in general:

- The year is 1978. The leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints receive a revelation that this long-time promise has come true: "...the time will come when they will have the privilege of all we have the privilege of and more." And who are they? Black people - and only after the passage of the Civil Rights Act and mounting pressure from the Civil Rights Movement. That's right - blacks were black due to the mark of Cain, and thus, sub-human, etc. The church's history is long and ugly and if you're up for a chore, you can read about it. The abandonment of polygamy was similarly opportunistic in that it rode on federal legislation. Some revelations - it would seem that limiting the exercise of religion is as necessary as allowing it.

- There are still Orthodox Jewish sects in the United States that perform metzitzah b'peh, a form of male circumcision in which a rabbi or mohel removes blood and debris via the sucking of the infant's penor. Disgusting? Yes. Dangerous? Yes - remember you learned about sexually transmitted diseases in health class? How about religious sects that disapprove of the practice of medicine? What of their children - is not a minor too young to legally take such a situation into their own hands? (Not to mention that one of my mother's best friends died in her early adulthood because the state decided to honor the "freedom to practice religion.") Again, today the state finds it necessary to "tame" religion, as it were - the pratice is not only abusive, but potentially illegal when children are involved.

I could go on about why I don't particularly like Islam, the most totalitarian of the Abrahamic religions, but I think I've made my point.

However, the building of the mosque != Imposing Sharia, or banning the practice of medicine. If it isn't harming anyone, it should be legal.

I agree with you completely on that point. Here's a recent snippet from Governor not-actually-a-governor (a stupid and strange phenomenon) Palin:

Book burning is antithetical to American ideals. People have a constitutional right to burn a Koran if they want to, but doing so is insensitive and an unnecessary provocation – much like building a mosque at Ground Zero.

She does not get it, and if anything, is incurring the wrath of more extremists.
