This has been around for a while, and I'm skeptical - not of voxel point-cloud technology, but of "Unlimited Detail" specifically. Their videos and website look really unprofessional... I dunno, maybe it's just that guy's voice in the video.

The tech and claim has been around for a while but this video is new. And it's a small time Austraila company what do you expect? Billion dollar M$?
I for am not skeptical about this, but do not see this working smoothly with video games untill around 2015-2020.
Mainly cause they said it requires alot of Processing power and it doesn't account for animations/physics/etc...
That's if we make it till then

His main points were: To have a 1 square kilometer island, with a height of 8 meters, it would require 512 000 000 000 000 000 (512 quadrillion) "atoms" to make up the world. Assuming an "atom" is just 1 byte (in reality it would have to be larger), that's 512 petabytes of information to store. Also, the video only shows repeating structures, mostly symmetrical, never different. They also don't show any real animation based on voxels, because they are ridiculously hard (you have to move each atom!) and time consuming to make, in addition to requiring tons of processing power. Notch believes that this video was made just for the purpose of getting funding, and doesn't have a practical application. [/notch]
Personal opinion:As nice as it sounds, I would put it at more than 10-20 years ahead of us (in terms of necessary processing power). I think we'll just use more and more detailed geometry until something like that is viable. I wish this were real, but it probably isn't.
Like what WarHampster said, the company themselves seem to be pretty sketchy.
