Slaughtering civilians = fun
What the fuck. Apparently a mission in MW2 involves playing as a CIA agent disguised as a terrorist, walking into an airport, and then slaughtering unarmed civilians (and later cops) to avoid blowing his cover. In the end of the mission, the character you play as gets shot in the head by Makarov, the game's villain. The game will also have an option to skip this level. Activison says that the level is there to "invoke an emotional response in the player, let him/her know how evil the opponent is, and how urgent it is to stop them." I'm for free speech and all, but this is fucked up. Should the game be censored? No. Should Infinity Ward be pulling this shit? Also no. The mission is obviously there to generate publicity. Convenient how it is leaked by a beta tester just ~ 2 weeks before the game comes out, at the point in which the game must be already finalized (if they are shipping it to stores).
This is different from GTA, where the civilians you can (optionally) kill are all idiots, and react funnily. Here, the innocents scream, cry, etc. In the leaked video, the player shot two people in the head, one on the ground who already had a bullet in his leg, and a medic trying to help him. This is the definition of tasteless. Infinity Ward attempts to justify this with everyone in the airport being a grown man (no women/children get killed).
If I called the shots at infinity ward, here's what I would do in regards to this mission (during development, not after):
Either:
1. Scrap the mission entirely, and rebuild with you playing as a civilian, maybe one who gets a gun and fights back, maybe unable to do anything on rails, like the execution in COD4, maybe just have you run around and try to escape death, have the player pull out his/her cell phone and call his/her spouse/kids and tell them that he loves them, maybe getting cut off mid sentence by a bullet to the head. This would invoke a much greater emotional reaction and sense of urgency for me than gunning these people down.
2. Give the player the option to shoot his terrorist teammates (make it clear in the objectives, ie. say "Keep your cover in the massacre or kill the terrorists"). If you shoot a terrorist, have another one turn around and cap you in the head, ending the mission earlier, instead of the current option (a warning message before the mission telling you that the following level may be disturbing to some people, would you like to play it Yes/No). This would allow the sick fucks who want a Nazi campaign in COD7 and feel an emotional connection by shooting civilians in the face to do so.
Or, do both. Have two missions, one after the other, one of which you play as a terrorist, and another in which you play as a civilian (and maybe a third one where you play as a counter-terrorist).
All in all, I wasn't going to buy the game before, and I still won't (If I wanted the game, I would still be disturbed by this content, but would buy it). I'm just afraid Activision just wants some controversial so that way it makes it cool for 10 year olds to spend their parents money on because it is controversial (controversity sells), and the rest of the industry will suffer from FOX NEWS doing a special report on the sex-box, where terrorists train and plan missions, and your child is being indoctrinated by socialism.
This might make sense in a realistic game like Operation Flashpoint or ARMA, but in WAR PRESENTED BY MICHAEL BAY [/cruise control], complete with dual wielding machine pistols, throwing knives, and snowmobile chases, this is a stupid publicity stunt.
BTW, Activision has forced all websites hosting the video to delete it, or be sued for copyright violation, which is why I can't find a video to link to here. I'm going to check the waffle sites, see if I can find a copy.

Infinity Ward is disturbed? Holy shit Pheonix...
Come on. I know that you love massacring civs in GMOD as much as the next guy. Stuff like this is no different from shock movies, it exists to scare people and to prove that it can. Shock movies have been around for so long that they don't generate controversy anymore, soon the same will happen for games.
EDIT - a few quotes that made me lol
Zitat :
That's only in the french version of the game. In the english version the airport is switched for a school so players feel more at home while playing
Zitat :
WOAH...this is gonna be so sick when you play on a dedicated server with 40 people being the civilians running away and 10 guys being the terrorists! Damn I cant till someone creates a modded game mode like that and runs it on a dedicated server. I am totally gonna buy this game so I can do that

Two things, Pheonix:
1. Put some goddamn spoiler tags on that. NOT ONLY do I now know about a thing in advance when I would make the choice by myself, a large story point is spoiled for me.
2. Cry me a river. It's a game, and it's not "justifying" anything. It's to add shock factor and maybe inspire the player to finish the campaign to stop this. I think, while I personally have thought of that or put it in, it was a valid choice and I'm going to play it. Not from sadism, but from wanting all I can get from the experience. If it leaves me just as depressed as Call of Duty 4, if not more, so be it.

I was just saying that would make me hate the enemy more than me just changing team for one mission and shooting innocents.

Not really. Personally, I don't like shooting people that can't fight back, it's not fun at all. At least in the GTA series, half the people are packing a gun or a switchblade, and even if they aren't they will try to fight back.
I'm just upset Infinity Ward went down the "be tasteless, create controversy, ????, PROFIT." path.

Epic win.
I loled at the quotes. But quotes like these just make me rage:
Zitat :
Some FPSBannana forum member (probably a troll) says: Anyone who doesn't play this is a pussy. I think it will be fun *RUN BITCHES PEW PEW PEW*. This looks funny.
That is with corrected spelling and grammar. If I got to choose who got locked up in mental institution, it would be 10 year olds like that.

I agree with you on number 2. However, I never said infinity ward is justifying terrorism. I said that they are fucked up. If I bought MW2, I probably would play the mission also to get the full experiance. I just don't think it should be there in the first place.
Number 1: FOX NEWS isn't going to put spoiler tags on it when they talk about the COMPUTAR PROGRAM DAT TURNS YOUR KIDS INTO TERRORISTS. Also, it would be pointless for it to be a story point, because if you are going to give players the option to skip it, it can't be that important. Activision says the only point to make the player angry (And the sick fucks who want a Nazi campaign in COD7 aren't going to be angry).

The media shitstorm has begun. Apparently Australia will probobly ban MW2 now.
Jane Roberts of the Australian Council on Children schrieb:

South Australian Attorney-General Michael Atkinson schrieb:

That guy is a douche bag. Now that Australia has jumped on the bandwagon, expect other countries to follow suit. Great going Infinity Ward.

Other than multiplayer games (i.e. Day of Defeat or multiplayer mode in COD5), are there really that many actual campaigns?

1. They are not justifying terrorism, its just a fucking violent game get over with it.(even tho some terrorism justifiable jk)
2. The you did post a spoil, about
Spoiler:
the CIA agent getting shot in the head at the end.
and 3. Australia has like a million banned games... they banned GTA: san andreas for crying out loud! and you know why they banned it? For having a "MOD" that allows you to have "SEX" and "CONTROL" they player during.... >.<
So I don't think just cause Australia says they going to ban it doesn't mean other countrys will follow suit.
Edit:

I must only agree, and because the U.S. rating is M, 17+, I expect it won't be banned. The ERSB expects 17 year olds to be capable of understanding that its a game, designed only for the maximum amount of entertainment.

It can't legally be banned in the United States. Other countries, such as Australia and Germany, aren't so lucky.

Explain why it can't be legally banned in the United States. If you think about it, if anything appeals as "that revolting" to the majority of the American population, there is always a chance of some kind of limit.
